To the Editor: —May I bo permitted a little space in your vuluable paper to mako a fow remarks on a subject which I think ia of groat and increasing importance to the agricultural interests of tho province. Farmers have, perhaps, more enemies to deal with than men of any othor business. Probably tho most numerous and most destructive of those enemies aro "noxious iiiBocts," small and insignificant as they are individually, they thoroughly understand and act up to tho proverb, "Union ia Strength."

Many people have not iho least.idea of tho amount of damage dono by these httlo pests, and the tn.mors who do know, from bitter oxperiouco, aro, as a rule, quite unablo to prevent it. I propose to give a fow instances of damage dono by insects, and then suggest, what seoins to mo, to bo tbo suroat preventative and most practical roinody.

Bliss Ormorod, consulting entomologist to the '"Royal Agricultural Society of England," says, in ono of hor yearly reports, that tho injury dono to cattle in tho Unitod Kingdom each year by ono insect, the common "hatt tly," is not less than §0 per head.

Mr. das. Fetcher, vice-president of tho "Entomological Society of Ontario," conclusively proved before tho select committee appointed by the house of commons to inquire into the best means of developing agriculture in Canada, that insects in Canada cause an annual loss of at least $20,000,000. Without multiplying instances, it is evident to anyone who has given the subject u thought thut in a growing province like British Columbia, this is a vory serious matter. Moreover, this is decidedly a caao m which "a stitch in. time saves nine." I think wo ought to meet this dilliculty in tho same way that wo do other ills that "Hush is hoirto.
